"Opening soon," says the website for Bar Fortuna, the new wine bar going into 2917 Main Street. Two doors up, at 2929 Main, the site for Chez Luna Adoption Cafe still says "Coming This Summer." Summer officially ended on September 22. Four days later, on Saturday, September 26, the Starbucks at 2901 Main closed for good.
That one block between 2900 and 2930 Main is where Ocean Park's fall changes are bunched up. The block lost its chain coffee counter, and the two businesses set to open in its place both put coffee at the center of their plans. As of the first week of October, neither has served a cup.
The morning stop that closed in late September
The Main Street Starbucks closed as part of a company-wide cutback. The Santa Monica Daily Press reported on September 25 that the store at 2901 Main and another on Wilshire were among roughly 250 stores the company planned to close across North America. That's about 250 out of 18,371. According to the Daily Press, the chain said it was closing locations where it saw no "path to acceptable financial performance." Westside Current said the Main Street store was one of four Santa Monica Starbucks to close within a year. No new tenant for 2901 Main has been announced.
A month earlier, the block was set to lose something else. JuneShine announced that Friday, August 28, would be the final day for its Main Street tasting room, which the business association's directory lists at 2914 Main. When Santa Monica Wave reported the planned closure on August 4, no new tenant or permit application for the space had been announced. That puts two storefronts on the block in transition within about six weeks of each other.
Two replacements, both built around a cup
The businesses on their way to the block won't take over those two spaces. They're going into storefronts that were already set aside for them, and both are coffee-plus concepts.
Bar Fortuna, 2917 Main. This is the former Vamos Vamos space. What Now Los Angeles reported in late July that the restaurant was aiming to open in early fall with a focus on handmade pasta. The chef also runs Crudo e Nudo at 2724 Main, so the new spot keeps him on the same street. On September 22, The Infatuation described it as an all-day wine bar. The plan is a walk-up espresso window in the morning, then handmade pastas, vegetable dishes and pork chops at lunch and dinner. It has a full liquor license, so the drinks list covers a wide range of wine and several kinds of negronis. Eater LA's fall preview, published September 10, gives Bar Fortuna a projected opening of October. The restaurant hasn't announced a firm date.
Chez Luna Adoption Cafe, 2929 Main. This is a dog adoption cafe, not a cat cafe. The business describes it as serving premium lattes alongside rescue and foster dogs. In February, What Now Los Angeles reported that the founders planned to work with rescues and shelters. The report didn't name a specific partner. The Main Street Business Improvement Association's listing still says "Summer 2026," and we found no opening announcement.
If both open, a morning coffee on this block will look different than it did in September. You'd order at a walk-up window from a pasta kitchen or at a counter with adoptable dogs. Until then, the block has no coffee.
Main Street by address, as of October 4
Here's the full fall picture in address order, from the lowest number to the highest. It covers every confirmed opening, closing and pending opening we could document.
- 2015 Main, Santa Monica Market. Opened. The Santa Monica Daily Press reported in August that the new owners added a deli counter, which launched in early July.
- 2441 Main, La Diperie. Pending. The Montreal-based dessert chain, known for dipped ice cream, is taking over the former Holey Grail Donuts space. Main Street's directory set a target of "End of Summer 2026," and the company's own store locator still lists the Santa Monica location as "Coming Soon."
- 2651 Main, Met Her At A Bar. Opened. The Ocean Park Association's August 10 newsletter ran under the headline "Met Her on Main Opens Today." The Infatuation listed the Santa Monica location by late August.
- 2724 Main, Crudo e Nudo. Open. It's the existing restaurant from the chef behind Bar Fortuna.
- 2901 Main, former Starbucks. Closed September 26. No new tenant announced.
- 2914 Main, JuneShine tasting room. Closure announced for August 28. No new tenant announced as of the August report.
- 2917 Main, Bar Fortuna. Pending. Eater projects October.
- 2929 Main, Chez Luna Adoption Cafe. Pending, with its summer target now passed.
Four of the eight addresses are on the 2900 block. And of the six businesses that opened or announced plans this year, the two that are actually serving customers now are both well north of that block.
The openings that already happened came without much buildup
The new places you can walk into today are smaller additions. Santa Monica Market didn't move or rebrand. It added a deli counter inside its existing store at 2015 Main. Met Her At A Bar went from a July announcement to opening day in about three weeks. The Santa Monica Mirror reported on July 23 that the owners were aiming for August, and the Ocean Park Association confirmed the opening on August 10.
The three pending projects have taken longer. La Diperie's sign went up at 2441 Main by early April, when the Santa Monica Mirror reported that Holey Grail had closed and that no timeline had been announced. Chez Luna's plans were public by February. Some of the "summer" and "early fall" dates were set many months in advance, and several of them have now passed.
For October, a "coming soon" sign on Main Street means the lease is signed. It doesn't mean the opening date is set.
Two Sundays worth putting on the calendar
The weekly fixture hasn't changed. The Main Street Farmers Market runs every Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., all year. The City notes it may close for holidays or extreme conditions, and its market page lists no fall schedule change.
The one-off event is two weeks away. The Main Street Block Party + Day of the Dog runs Sunday, October 18, from noon to 6 p.m. The organizer's event listing describes a free, all-ages street event with Halloween-themed pets, music, kids' activities and a pet photo booth. Some older pages on the business association's site still show last year's block party date and a 2024 Howl-O-Ween. The October 18 listing is the current one.
You could spend that Sunday on Main with the market in the morning and the block party after noon. Along the way you'd pass the deli counter at 2015, Met Her at 2651, the former Starbucks at 2901, the JuneShine space at 2914, and two papered windows at 2917 and 2929. The block party's dog theme fits a block where a dog adoption cafe is still waiting to open, though no one has said Chez Luna will be part of the event.
We'll keep checking these addresses as the papered windows come down. If you own near Main Street and want to know how this year's turnover shows up when buyers walk the neighborhood, Megan Whalen is glad to go through it with you, one block at a time. Let's Connect.
